    Xanax in system

What are the long-term effects of Xanax use on the brain if taken exactly as directed? It seems that my mind feels like it is stuck in the mud, hazy and there is a feeling of a disconnect with the world sometimes. Ultimately, how long does it take for your brain and mind to return to "normal" function? Benzodiazepines are a type of medication known as tranquilizers. They are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. When people without prescriptions obtain and take these drugs for their sedating effects, use turns into abuse. Although some people may have a genetic tendency to become addicted to drugs, there is little doubt that environmental factors also play a significant role. Some of the more common environmental influences are low socioeconomic status, unemployment, and peer pressure. At normal or regular doses, benzodiazepines relieve anxiety and insomnia. Sometimes, people taking benzodiazepines may feel drowsy or dizzy. This side effect can be more pronounced with increased doses. If you have any questions, you could call your doctor, but if you are in doubt whether someone needs immediate medical attention, you should go directly to a hospital emergency department.

Benzodiazepines are a class of prescription drugs with sedating properties that stem from their ability to increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter known as GABA. One of the most popular of these medications is Xanax, or alprazolam in its generic form, as reports that in 2011, it was the 11th most prescribed drug in the United States. Xanax is used in the management of panic and anxiety disorders. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prescribing information for Xanax indicates that taking the drug can lead to dependence, especially when taking high doses for longer than a month. Xanax is commonly abused because, in addition to its sedative effects, its use is associated with increased dopamine release in the reward pathways of our brains. GABA acts as a kind of natural sedative in the brain, slowing down certain functions and muting reactions to stress. In 2011, the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reported that close to 10 percent of all emergency department visits related to the abuse of pharmaceuticals involved the benzodiazepine, or benzo, alprazolam. Over time, Xanax may actually influence the production of GABA, and the brain may stop making it without the presence of the drug. However, it is not a first line treatment since the development of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Alprazolam is no longer recommended in Australia for the treatment of panic disorder due to concerns regarding tolerance, dependence, and abuse. Most evidence shows that the benefits of alprazolam in treating panic disorder last only 4 to 10 weeks. However, people with panic disorder have been treated on an open basis for up to 8 months without apparent loss of benefit. In the US, alprazolam is FDA-approved for the management of anxiety disorders (a condition corresponding most closely to the APA Diagnostic and Statistical Manual DSM-IV-TR diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder) or the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety. In the UK, alprazolam is recommended for the short-term treatment (2–4 weeks) of severe acute anxiety. Benzodiazepines require special precaution if used in children and in alcohol- or drug-dependent individuals.

Hi everyone I have been prescribed 50mg of sertraline for anxiety and depression. However after reading many forums of individual experiences I am wary of taking this dose. I took it upon my own initiative to half the tablet as I have read many negative experiences around 50mg, mainly bad side effects. I know 50mg is the therapeutic dose but I do not want to be 'spaced' out and unable to attend university or go to work where I am required to drive. Currently I am feeling no side effects but this is very early days. I am in two minds whether to continue with 25mg or throw myself into 50mg and ride out the storm.
